DescriptionProvides comprehensive management to facilitate the operation of the assigned section through training, coordination, and direction of staff technologists, to ensure delivery of quality laboratory services. Performs and evaluates various clinical laboratory tests in one or more Sections of the clinical laboratory for neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient populations and possibly, in laboratories at off-site facilities, to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Analyzes and interprets test results and ensures accuracy of results. Repeats testing as necessary, especially those which are abnormal or atypical, and notifies appropriate personnel of such results.

Requirements & Working Conditions

Completion of a BS degree in Medical Technology.

Five years progressively more responsible experience as a Medical Technologist in order to become knowledgeable in all areas of Clinical Laboratory policies and procedures. Five years of experience in the specific section(s) of responsibility. Management experience necessary to implement policies, procedures and develop operating budgets for the section.

Licensed by the State of Florida as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist in appropriate sections with a Supervisors license or Technologists with Supervisors license acquired within the probationary period. National certification required.

Visual acuity, color discrimination, manual dexterity, and eye-hand coordination necessary to properly perform testing procedures on blood and body fluids and enter testing data into the hospital and lab computers, and when necessary, to perform function verification of laboratory equipment and instrument maintenance. Ability to drive to satellite facilities to perform lab testing.

Ability to lift, carry, and manipulate solvents/solvent containers for testing purposes, to a maximum of 25 lbs. up to 5% of the time.

Ability to drive company vehicle to off-hospital sites, including Family Health Centers, and on occasion, may be asked to use personal vehicle to include mileage reimbursement. Employees who regularly drive company vehicles must attend drivers education programs at least once every 3 years.

Clinical Laboratory environment where there are some physical discomforts due to unpleasant odors from chemicals, specimens, gas fumes, noise from equipment, intercom, and telephone, eighty percent of the work time.

Exposure (up to thirty percent of the work time), to hazardous chemicals and infectious specimens, but knowledge of and careful adherence to safety and health precautions limits the potential for personal harm or injury.
